Betty Friedan, best known for her book Feminine Mystique, has played a leading role in the struggle for women's rights
in the United States. This site is intended to inform others about her work and provide additional sources of information.
During the 1950's, women were expected to stay home to take care of the children, husband, and household.
Women were seen as passive beings, who were created to do the domestic work. Henry and Taitz state that "The problem
for Betty, and for so many other women like her, was that they were not satisfied. They felt something was missing in
their lives, but did not know what it was"(49). With the help of a questionaire, Betty figured out exactly what was
wrong with the women of the United States and this led her on the path of activism.
